3, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 0 ST. MARYS – Well there will be at least one new PIAA playoff team from District 9 Class A baseball this season, as 12th seeded Ridgway upset fifth-seeded Elk County Catholic, last year’s third-place team, 3-0 Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys. The game was a pitcher’s duel between Ridgway’s Mike Miraglia and ECC’s Nick Brennen with Miraglia dancing through the rain drops to get the victory. The Ridgway hurler stranded 11 ECC base runners while holding the Crusaders to just one hit in 13 at bats with runners in scoring position. He allowed just two hits in the complete-game shutout but did walk six while striking out 11 including the rare feat of striking out four ECC batters in the second inning – one of the strikeout victims reached base when the ball got past the catcher. Brennen was nearly as effective allowing just five hits and three unearned runs in the complete-game loss. He walked three and struck out 11. Ridgway’s entire offense came in the third inning thanks to a throwing error on a bunted ball that allowed two runs to score and a fielder’s choice groundout by Barry Wilson. ECC’s best chance to tie the game came in the fifth when they loaded the bases with just one out, but an infield fly out and a fly out to center field ended the threat. The Crusaders also had the tying run at the plate in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t score. Ridgway (10-7), winners of four in a row, will play at fourth-seeded Curwensville at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. CLASS

The fourth-seeded Gremlins will now face top-seeded and unbeaten Redbank Valley at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Legion Field in Hawthorne, Redbank Valley’s home field. Turner was pretty much in control the entire game allowing just the one run. He walked two and struck out five. A four-run fifth inning broke open a 2-1 lead for the Gremlins. Nate Shaffer, who had a double and an RBI for Brockway, took the loss for the Rovers going four-plus innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four. Josh Stimac added a pair of hits for Karns City, while Mark Shannon at two base knocks for Brockway. |
