May 29, 2008 - District 9 Class A Baseball Championship Game at St. Marys' Berwind Park

By Fred Kavelak

ST. MARYS - Sean McManigle's grand-slam home run in the first inning jump-started Cameron County's potent offense and Cameron Clingan pitched a three-hitter as the Red Raiders trimmed Curwensville 13-1 in 4-1/2 innings at Berwind Park Thursday for their second District 9 Class A baseball crown in three years.

Coach Dick Harrier's veteran team, which lost to Johnsonburg 8-3 in the 9-A championship game last year and then 2-1 in their rematch in the PIAA semifinals, showed why it is hitting at nearly a .400 clip and averaging almost 12 runs a game.

Cameron County (17-2) pounded 11 hits, including the homer and four doubles, off Golden Tide ace Ben McGary and Wes McGarry and scored at least two runs in every inning.

Eight Red Raiders joined the hit parade, with David Lyon, Adam Zoschg and Darrick Mason cracking two apiece.

Mason, Garrett Hornung and Cory Reed each had two runs batted in.

Clingan, who missed the first half of the season because of illness, fanned five and walked two in picking up his fourth win without a loss.

The Golden Tide's Jed Greslick broke up his shutout bid with a lead-off home run to deep left center in the fourth inning.

Singles by Jordan Crane and Lyon and an error on Clingan's grounder preceded McManigle's blast just to the left of the 360-foot mark in left center that set the tone for the game.

Hornung doubled for two runs and later scored on Lyon's single to make it 7-0 after two frames.

A walk and back-to-back RBI-doubles by Zoschg and Mason, the No. 8 and No. 9 batters, upped the lead to 9-0 in the third inning.

Reed's bases-loaded single highlighted a four-run rally in the fourth that set up the early finish because of the Mercy Rule.

Both teams will be in action Monday in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs, Cameron County against District 7 third place Serra Catholic (21-2) and Curwensville (17-6) against District 6 champion Homer-Center.
