BROCKWAY – Courtesy runner Lisa Master scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning to give Smethport a 2-1 win over Curwensville in the District 9 Class A softball championship game Thursday at Brockway.

The victory broke a two-game losing streak in the District 9 playoffs for Smethport against Curwensville. The Lady Tide had eliminated the Lady Hubbers in the semifinals in each of the last two seasons. The win also gave Smethport its first District 9 title since 2004.

Emma Hahn pitched another masterpiece for Smethport going seven innings and allowing one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Smethport, the second seed, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and held it until the sixth when top-seeded Curwensville tied the game at one on an RBI by

Ashley Demchak that scored Jenessa Stiles. But the Lady Hubbers got that run back in the top of the seventh thanks to a wild pitch by Holly Lansberry.

Lansberry was the hard-luck loser going seven innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Both teams now advance to the PIAA playoffs.
