It’s probably a record number of District 9 girls’ playoff teams gunning for three district titles and eight state playoff berths. Action gets under way as early as Monday, Feb. 11.

In all, 17 Class A, five Class AA and three Class AAA teams have entered this year’s playoffs.

Here is a team-by-team breakdown of each school participating in the District 9 boys’ playoffs. To jump to a specific classification click on that class here:

Class A       Class AA         Class AAA

Editor’s Note: Records and stats are updated through Feb. 9, 2008.

CLASS A (Go to Top)

(Teams listed by seeding)

CLASS A NOTES: Talk about cornering the market. Union and Coudersport have combined to win 15 of the last 19 Class A championships. And in the 19 seasons starting way back in 1989, one or both of those teams have been in the championship game. Could that be different this year? At least the top five seeds — Elk County Catholic, Coudersport, Keystone, West Forest and Union — have a good shot. … Four teams advance to the state playoffs. … Union beat Coudersport for the second year in a row for its third straight crown last year. Elk County Catholic defeated Clarion-Limestone in the consolation game. … Union, Coudersport and Elk County Catholic have made up three-fourths of the state playoff berths the last three years.

1. ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC LADY CRUSADERS

HEAD COACH: Ken Pistner

RECORD: 24-1, 11-0 AML champions

FIRST-ROUND OPPONENT: Host Johnsonburg-Brockway winner on Feb. 13, 7 p.m.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 6-0

TOP PLAYERS: Bre Grimone (11.1 ppg.), Emily Detsch (11.0), Kirstie Pistner (10.6), Kaitlyn Geci (10.0).

NOTABLE: Four players averaging double figures in scoring is very rare, especially on a girls’ high school basketball team. And on a team with no seniors on the roster? The Lady Crusaders are the definition of balance and will try to break through to the top of the D9 ladder for the first time in almost 20 years. … Their win over DuBois Central Catholic Saturday claimed a third straight AML title. … Beat Johnsonburg and Brockway in all three meetings by an average margin of 15 points. They take a 15-game winning streak into the playoffs.

DISTRICT TITLES: 3 (1 in Class AA; 2 in Class A)

LAST TITLE: 1989 – Class A

2. COUDERSPORT LADY FALCONS

HEAD COACH: Brian Green

RECORD: 22-2, 14-0 North Tier League (1st place)

FIRST-ROUND OPPONENT: Host Port Allegany on Feb. 13, 7 p.m.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 13-0

TOP PLAYERS: Kristy Kamper (19.8 ppg.), Jessica Wilson (12.3), Karli Duffee (10.0).

NOTABLE: The Lady Falcons cruised to their third straight North Tier League title without much opposition and take a 21-game winning streak into the postseason … They’ve outscored opponents by over 32 points per game and lead the district in points per game … Kamper and Wilson each went over 1,000 career points within an 8-day span in January … Coudersport is looking for its eighth straight trip to the state playoffs and anything less would be a huge disappointment … Coudersport beat Port by 49 and 51 points during the regular season and have won 18 in a row against their NTL rivals … The Lady Falcons haven’t lost to Port since the 1999 season.

DISTRICT TITLES: 11 (11 in Class A)

LAST TITLE: 2004 – Class A

3. KEYSTONE LADY PANTHERS

HEAD COACH: Bruce Turk

RECORD: 22-2, 19-1 (KSAC champions)

FIRST-ROUND OPPONENT: Host DuBois Central Catholic on Feb. 12, 6 p.m.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 7-1

TOP PLAYERS: Samantha Schwabenbauer (13.9 ppg.), Cassy Hinderliter (13.0).

NOTABLE: The Lady Panthers haven’t won a district title in 20 years, but this year’s team might have a shot. Schwabenbauer, last year’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman and senior Hinderliter, lead a relatively experienced team with seven seniors on the roster … Keystone is looking for its first trip to the state playoffs since finishing fourth as the sixth seed in 2002. Since then, Keystone has lost three times in the quarterfinals, twice to Coudersport, a team it could face in the semifinals this time around … Lady Panthers lost to DCC the last time they met in the 2005-06 regular season, 62-59 in OT. Keystone beat the third-seeded Lady Cardinals in the 2002 quarterfinals in their last postseason meeting … Hinderliter enters the postseason needing 33 points for 1,000 career points, Schwabenbauer, meanwhile, has 682 career points as a sophomore.

DISTRICT TITLES: 2 (2 in Class AA)

LAST TITLE: 1988 – Class AA

4. WEST FOREST LADY INDIANS

HEAD COACH: Bob Wachob

RECORD: 19-5, 14-5 KSAC (2nd in West Division)

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 3-4

TOP PLAYERS: Geena Sneeringer (17.8 ppg.), Jackie Lutz (10.3), Amanda Carll (9.1), Erica Blum (8.9).

NOTABLE: Lady Indians started the year with Lutz on the injured list and went 2-3 in their first five games. She returned to the lineup and they’ve gone 17-2 since … Sneeringer shared Rookie of the Year honors with Keystone’s Schwabenbauer a year ago and followed that up with another solid season. She already has 788 career points as a sophomore … They haven’t played their old District 10 rival Sheffield since moving to District 9 … Last year’s playoffs were a thrilling ride, winning in double overtime in the preliminary round at home against DuBois Central Catholic, then losing in overtime at third-seeded ECC in the quarterfinals … West Forest is trying to get to the state playoffs for the first time since 1982. It was far more difficult to reach states through a tighter, and in most years, very strong D-10 playoff system.

DISTRICT TITLES: None, fourth year in District 9

LAST TITLE: Never

HEAD COACH: Josh Meeker

RECORD: 17-8, 14-6 KSAC (1st place East Division and lost in championship game).

FIRST-ROUND OPPONENT: Host East Forest on Feb. 12, 6 p.m.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 4-3

TOP PLAYERS: Torri Smith (14.1 ppg.), Courtney Frederick (10.0.).

NOTABLE: Another year, another solid coaching job by Meeker, who has taken his team to the state playoffs in each of his first five seasons. The Golden Damsels reached the KSAC Championship game after winning the East Division without perhaps an all-district player on the roster … Union has won three straight D9 titles and played in the last four title games. The Golden Damsels have reached the state tournament in nine of the last 10 years … This team is young with only two seniors on the roster … In two games against East Forest, the Damsels have won by a combined 10 points, including a 47-41 win on Feb. 7 in Marienville. Union won at home on Dec. 21, 40-36.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 5-6

TOP PLAYERS: Brittany Rounds (11.7 ppg.), Nikki Thompson (8.5), Katie Smoker (7.6).

NOTABLE: The Lady Panthers advanced to the quarterfinals the last two years with first-round wins over Clarion, but haven’t won a quarterfinal round game since finishing third and qualifying for states in 1999. … Higher seed advantage? Northern Potter lost both games this year to Austin, 42-40 on the road and 46-39 at home on Feb. 2.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 5-3

NOTABLE: Coach Walter has done well with this group, winning 15 games without a player averaging double figures in scoring … Lady Cats swept Union and Karns City, but still couldn’t win the KSAC East because of losses to sub-.500 teams Clarion-Limestone and North Clarion … Clarion beat Venango in their only meeting of the season, 46-29, at home on Jan. 11 … Since going to states as the third-place team in 2005, the Lady Cats lost two straight preliminary round games at Northern Potter.

NOTABLE: It’s been a turnaround season for Coach Smith, whose team won just three games a year ago. Its 11-win improvement over last year going into the playoffs is tied for the best in D9 with St. Marys … Green Wave are making just their second district playoff appearance (2005 the other) since winning their last district playoff game in the 2000 postseason … They started 9-2 before NTL play, then lost four in a row, won five in a row and closed the regular season with four straight losses. CLASS AA (Go to Top)

(Teams listed by seeding)

DISTRICT TITLES: 10 (4 in Class AAA, 6 in Class AA)

LAST TITLE: 2001 – Class AAA

CLASS AAA (Go to Top)

(Teams listed by seeding)

CLASS AAA NOTES: In the small three-team bracket, St. Marys will try to add its name to the champions list for the first time since 1994. The Lady Dutch have played in four championship games since then and lost. The 1997 and 1998 games had no bearing on the postseason, but the winner got a D9 trophy. Class AAA teams those years had to enter the playoffs through District 6. The Lady Dutch lost in the 2005 final to Punxsutawney. … As was the case last year, the runner-up will receive a play-in berth to the state tournament. … The Lady Dutch are also the only team in the field with a winning record.

1. ST. MARYS LADY DUTCHMEN

HEAD COACH: Bob Swanson

RECORD: 21-3, 10-2 D9 League (2nd place)

FIRST-ROUND OPPONENT: Either Bradford or Punxsutawney in the championship game.

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 4-0

TOP PLAYERS: Kayla Hoohuli (21.1 ppg.), Mandy Stinchcomb (9.3), Gina Pelgrin (8.5).

NOTABLE: It’s been a long time since the Lady Dutch have had this high of hopes going into the postseason, not since the Molly Carr-led team back in 1994. It’s the team’s first 20-win season since a 22-3 mark in 1995. The main reason: the debut of super freshman Kayla Hoohuli. The 5-foot-8 guard is a shoe-in for Rookie of the Year honors and is on the very short list for Player of the Year. The supporting cast will have to be ready to step up in the postseason. Teams know what they have to do to beat St. Marys, so if they do slow down Hoohuli, the rest must be ready. St. Marys beat Punxsutawney, 56-43, in its regular-season finale. The 11-win improvement over last year is tied for best in the district for girls’ teams with Oswayo Valley.

DISTRICT TITLES: 1 (1 in Class AAA)

LAST TITLE: 1994 – Class AAA

2-3. PUNXSUTAWNEY LADY CHUCKS

HEAD COACH: Randy Reitz

RECORD: 8-15, 5-7 D9 League (4th place). Regular season game remaining Feb. 13 at State College

FIRST-ROUND OPPONENT: Bradford, Feb. 15, site TBA

RECORD VS. PLAYOFF FIELD: 1-3

TOP PLAYERS: Jube Parise (9.1 ppg.), Allie Miller (9.1), Emily Thompson (8.6).

NOTABLE: The Lady Chucks are certainly in a rebuilding season. They’re young with just two seniors, but an ambitious non-league schedule might make their record worse than it appears in relation to the rest of the playoff field. … Split their two regular season games with Bradford. It’s a rematch of last year’s D9 Class AAA Championship game where Bradford beat Punxsutawney to end the Lady Chucks’ five-year title run.

DISTRICT TITLES: 9 (4 in Class AAAA; 5 in Class AAA)

LAST TITLE: 2006 – Class AAA

2-3. BRADFORD

HEAD COACH: Doug Lloyd
