Heimel scores 1,000th career point for Coudersport

ST. MARYS – Coudersport’s Blair Heimel scored his 1,000th career point while putting up 14 tallies to lead the Falcons to an easy 70-40 win over Homer-Center in the opening round of the PIAA Class A boys’ playoffs Friday night at St. Marys High School.

Heimel, who needed 10 points entering the game to get 1,000, finished the night with 1,004 points. He is the second Falcon this season to go over 1,000 joining teammate John Hau, and he is the fourth member of Coudersport’s Class of 2008 to reach 1,000 joining Jessica Wilson and Kristy Kamper from the Coudy girls’ team.

Coudersport (28-0) led 29-14 at halftime and then outscored the Wildcats, the fourth-place team out of District 6, 24-7 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Colton Corey added 13 points for the Falcons, while Derek Burdick had 11, Hau nine and Eric Babcock eight.

Nathan Sykes led Homer-Center (21-8) with 12 points, while Mike Walker and Jordan Gazza each added seven.

Coudersport will now take on Union-New Castle, the third-place team out of District 7 Tuesday. Union-New Castle beat Shade (District 5 runner-up) 68-45.

NOTES – Hau, who is playing with a torn ACL, now has 1,048 career points … Heimel’s 14 tallies give him 500 exactly on the season … The win was Coudersport’s first PIAA playoff win since advancing to the PIAA quarterfinals in 2005 … Homer-Center scored nearly as many points in the fourth quarter, 19, as it did in the first three, 21.
