KNOX – Keystone outscored St. Marys 20-5 in the third quarter to break open a close game at the half and get a 58-34 win over the Dutch in the championship game of the Keystone Boys’ Basketball Tip-off Tournament.

Keystone led 24-19 at halftime but outscored St. Marys 20-5 in the third quarter to pull away.

“We had a much better flow in our offense today,” Keystone head coach Greg Heath said. “The movement was much better, we screened well and the screeners cut well after the screen. They just did a lot of things right.”

Keystone (2-0) also did a great job of limiting St. Marys’ best player, 6-foot-4 forward Levi Welder. The Panthers, despite not having a starter over 6-2 held Welder to five points, although the junior did grab 18 rebounds.

“I thought Kyle Rhoads did an outstanding job on him,” Heath said. “But we got him a lot of help. If he touched the ball inside, I expected somebody to be their immediately. We pretty much had him surrounded.”

Offensively, Keystone got a big third quarter out of Brian Long, who scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the decisive quarter including the final nine Keystone tallies of the frame.

“He played a real solid game for us,” Heath said. “He’s not afraid to take shots and make something happen.”

Matt Guido led all scorers with 19 points for St. Marys with several driving layups. The problem for the Dutch, however, was that Guido scored eight of the team’s 11 baskets in the game.

“Matt had a nice game,” Benson said. “But again, when we have to get into the mode of Matt breaking people down off the dribble it hurts our flow a little bit. We had to get away from the things we normally like to do offensively. That is a credit to Keystone.”

St. Mary’s offense was so out of sync that the Dutch were 0-for-19 from 3-point range.

“Keystone did a great job on the defensive end of the floor,” Benson said. “They took us out of anything we wanted to do.”

NOTES – Cristian Summerville was named tournament MVP … Clearfield won the consolation game 47-37 over DuBois behind 15 points from Drew Hipps.
