ST. MARYS – Coudersport outscored host St. Marys 8-7 in overtime to get a season sweep of the series with a 57-56 win Friday night at St. Marys.

Coudersport sent the game to overtime when Derek Burdick hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left tying the game at 49. The trey came less than 30 seconds after the Falcons (6-0) had seemingly lost the game when they were called from an over-and-back.

But the Coudersport defense got the ball back by forcing a 10-second call on St. Marys after the inbounds play. St. Marys head coach Brice Benson was trying to call time-out but wasn’t seen by the officials.

In overtime, Brett Quiggle gave St. Marys a 3-point lead, 52-49, on a 3-pointer from the wing with 3:31 left. But Coudersport went ahead 53-52 on buckets by John Hau and Brett Whitman. Matt Guido then put the Dutch (1-5), losers of five straight, back ahead, 54-53, with two free throws.

Hau, however, gave Coudersport the lead for good when he converted an offensive rebound into a hoop, and Brett Whitman hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to put the Falcons ahead 57-54.

St. Marys got back within a point on a field goal by Brendan Mulcahy with five seconds left, and then had one final desperation shot from halfcourt by Quiggle that fell short as time expired.

The game might not have gone to overtime if not for a quirky play at the end of the first half.

St. Marys led 26-22 and was inbounding the ball from under its own hoop when the Dutch’s Matt Guido got disoriented after receiving the inbounds pass and laid the ball up for a 2-point basket. Unfortunately for Guido, it was the wrong basket giving Coudersport two points and cutting the Dutch lead to 26-24 at halftime.

Coudersport then tied the game at 35 at the end of three quarters.

Hau led a balanced Coudersport attack with 14 points and Eric Babcock and Burdick each added 11 points.

Quiggle led all scorers with 17 point, while Levi Welder had a double-double with 13 points and 123 rebounds. Guido pitched in with 12 points, and Mulcahy had 10.

NOTES – Coudersport played without Blair Heimel (17.4 ppg) … The scoring on the Guido basket for Coudersport at the end of the first half was credited to Coudersport as a team. According to the NCAA Basketball statistics manual, while the team gets credit for the two points, no made basket is credited. Also, St. Marys is credited with a turnover … St. Marys hosts Port Allegany Saturday, while Coudersport is back in action Monday at Troy.
