ST. MARYS – Levi Welder scored 25 points and added 14 rebounds to lead the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen to a 70-57 victory over the visiting Port Allegany Gators Saturday night in a cold and wintry non-league match up that broke a 5-game losing streak for St. Marys.

St. Marys came out early taking a quick 6-2 lead over the Gators as Welder hit two quick 3-pointers in the first two minutes of play.

The Dutch stretched the lead to eight points, 12-4, before the Gators mounted a charge to trail by only four, 20-16, at the end of the first quarter.  Welder scored 12 points in the quarter.

St. Marys opened up an 8-point halftime advantage, 33-25, with balanced scoring in the second period. Welder and Brett Quiggle each scored four points while Matt Guido added three points.  Greg Gustin and Levi Perry led the Gators at the half with eight and six points respectively.

Port Allegany came out of the locker room at halftime running of six quick points to cut the St. Marys’ lead to 33-31 with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter.  Bryce Healy scored two break-away layups to lead the charge.

But from there on out, it was all Dutchmen.  Quiggle led the Dutch in period with seven tallies allowing St. Marys to a 47-35 lead at the end of the quarter.

The fourth period saw the Dutchmen at the foul line frequently as the Gators were forced to foul.  St. Marys converted 16 of 18 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.  For the game, St. Marys made 26 of 30 from the charity stripe. Welder was a perfect 11 of 11.

Helping Welder snap the Dutchmen's five-game losing streak were Guido with 15 points and nine assists and Quiggle, who finished with 15 points and five steals.

Leading the way for Port Allegany was Greg Gustin with 15 points and Derick Morey chipping in 13.

St. Marys, now 2-5 on the season, will host the Johnsonburg Rams Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Dutch Oven in St. Marys.
