Dec. 12, 2007

St. Marys’ super freshman Kayla Hoohuli continued her early-season domination scoring 33 points including 23 over the final 10 minutes to lead the Lady Dutch to a 61-53 come-from-behind win at Clearfield in D9 League play Wednesday night.

CLEARFIELD – St. Marys’ super freshman Kayla Hoohuli continued her early-season domination scoring 33 points including 23 over the final 10 minutes to lead the Lady Dutch to a 61-53 come-from-behind win at Clearfield in D9 League play Wednesday night.

Hoohuli and St. Marys (6-0 overall, 1-0 D9 League) were fairly quite through the game’s first 22 minutes with the freshman, who is averaging 26.2 ppg, scoring just 10 points through late in the third quarter and the Lady Dutch found themselves trailing 35-26 with two minutes left in the quarter.

St. Marys was still down 42-33 going to the fourth, but Hoohuli, who added 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, took over the game scoring 10 points in the first 1:36 of the fourth quarter including a pair of straightaway three’s to cut the Lady Bison lead to 46-43.

Mandy Stinchcomb then continued the Lady Dutch run scoring four straight points to give St. Marys its first lead since the first quarter at 47-46. Another basket by Hoohuli with 5:17 left made it 49-46 Lady Dutch, and the run continued a little over two minutes later with a highlight reel sequence by Hoohuli.

The freshman blocked a shot by Clearfield’s Amber Byerly, forced a jump ball on the inbound pass for a turnover and then pushed the ball down floor driving down the right side and bouncing a pass to Leann Levenduski on the left-side of the basket for a lay-up that made it 51-46.

St. Marys wasn’t done yet pushing the run to 22-4 on four more points by Hoohuli, who was on the receiving end of back-to-back bombs making it 55-46 with 1:51 to play.

Stinchcomb and Gina Pelgrin each added 10 points for St. Marys, while Alanna Luzier led Clearfield with 17 tallies. Annie Janocko and Jayme Ryan each chipped in with 12 for the Lady Bisons (3-3, 1-2), who led 15-12 after one quarter and 20-19 at halftime before outscoring St. Marys 22-14 in the third quarter. All 12 of Ryan’s came on four 3-pointers.

NOTES – It is the second time this season Hoohuli has surpassed 30 points. She had a career-high 37 points Dec. 3 against Johnsonburg ... Hoohuli had 19 points in the fourth quarter.
