Dec. 29, 2007 - Championship Game of the Elk County Holiday Tournament

By Rich Quiggle

ST. MARYS – It took triple overtime, but Elk County Catholic now has a half-decade straight worth of Elk County Holiday Tournament hardware thanks to a 74-67 win over St. Marys Saturday night at St. Marys High School.

The Crusaders, who have won five straight tournament crowns, won despite blowing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead.

ECC led 43-31 early in the fourth quarter before St. Marys started to heat up.

In the fourth quarter, Levi Welder hit three 3-pointers, Matt Guido scored 11 points and the St. Marys defense held ECC to three baskets and 13 points in the quarter helping the Dutch end regulation on an 18-6 run that tied the game at 49.

The first overtime saw Brendan Mulcahy shake free from Crusader defenders twice for open layups for the Dutch, but Nate Higgins hit a 3-pointer and ECC, shaky from the foul line its last few games, hit 3 of 4 from the charity stripe to forge a 53-all tie at the end of the four minutes.

The second extra 4-minute period saw the Crusader go 6 of 7 from the foul line including a perfect 4-for-4 from Logan Haberberger. St. Marys responded with 3-pointers from Welder and Jon Petrocchi, and both squads put up eight points to keep the score knotted at 61 entering the third overtime.

In the third overtime, Haberberger asserted himself as go-to-guy for ECC, as all of the big men for St. Marys had either fouled out or were in foul trouble. Haberberger scored eight points in the quarter including an emphatic dunk as time expired helping the Crusaders outscore St. Marys 11-4 in the third extra period.

Higgins led ECC with 24 points, while Keil Nissel added 21. Haberberger chipped in with 18.

Guido led all scorers with 27 points for the Dutch, while Welder added 16.

NOTES – It was the second straight night that a boys’ game involving a District 9 team went to at least three overtimes after Portville (NY) beat Oswayo Valley 64-61 in four overtimes Friday night. Prior to Friday’s night’s game, no District 9 boys’ game had gone past two overtimes in the 8-year history of D9Sports.com, which is when records of this type started to be tracked … Higgins, Nissel, Haberberger, Welder and Guido all garnered tournament awards with Higgins earning the Offensive MVP award and Guido nabbing the Defensive MVP award … The Dutch forced three overtimes despite playing nearly the entire fourth quarter and all of overtime without starting guard Brett Quiggle, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter and without Mulcahy, another starter, for nearly all three overtimes after he fouled out at the beginning of the first overtime.
