NATRONA HEIGHTS – Eric Guth became the seventh player in Venango Catholic boys’ basketball history when he scored 17 points in a 65-25 win over Cheswick Christian in the consolation game of the St. Joseph Tournament Saturday afternoon. With the 17 points, Guth now has exactly 1,000 career tallies. He is the first Viking to surpass 1,000 points since Ryan Rhoades reached the mark in 2001, and Rhoades and Guth are the only two 1,000-point scorers for Venango Catholic since 1990. Guth, who scored his 1,000th point with seven minutes left in the game right before being taken out because of the lopsided score, added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Joe Maleski added 15 points and seven rebounds while hitting three 3-pointers, and Alex Eckert chipped in 15 points and five boards helping the Vikings even their mark at 5-5. Eric Parfitt led Cheswick with nine tallies. |
