By Rich Quiggle ST. MARYS – St. Marys was as hot as an oven at the Dutch Oven Friday night start jumping out to a 21-3 first-quarter lead on its way to a 69-43 win over visiting Punxsutawney. Brett Quiggle, who finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, led the charge early hitting three consecutive 3-pointers in the first quarter. St. Marys (69 overall, 2-3 D9 League) led by as many as 30 points early on thanks to Quiggle, Levi Welder, who hit a pair of 3’s in the second quarter helping the Dutchmen to a 22-point halftime lead, 36-14. In the second half, the Chucks
(3-11, 0-5) made a couple of runs early in the third quarter cutting the lead once to 16, 40-24, behind a strong
inside performance by Dane Kopas, who scored seven of his game-high 22 points in the third period.
But the comeback was brief, as the Dutchmen stepped up the defense causing five steals in the quarter leading to easy baskets and a 52-28 lead entering the final quarter. Welder finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds, and Matt Guido checking in with 15 points and 7 assists. Helping Kopas offensively for GAME NOTES – After missing
the last two games with a head injury, Dutchmen senior Brendan Mulcahy returned to the starting lineup, scoring
three points and grabbing three rebounds … After what St. Marys head coach Brice Benson called a “poor
defensive performance” against Brookville Tuesday, ST. MARYS 69, PUNXSUTAWNEY 43 Score by Quarters Scoring:
