Deters two free throws with no time left lifts DuBois to win; Victory breaks 18-game D9 League losing streak for Lady Beavers and 19-game D9 League road losing streak

CLEARFIELD – Samantha Deter hit two free throws with no time left on the clock to lift DuBois to a 56-55 D9 League win at Clearfield Wednesday night.

The victory snaps an 18-game D9 League losing streak for the Lady Beavers (3-11 overall, 1-5 D9 League) and a 19-game D9 League road losing streak for DuBois.

Deter was fouled by Clearfield’s Sarah Kovalick after getting the basketball just across the half-court line on a long pass after DuBois had inbounded the ball from under the Lady Bison basket.

Deter then rattled the front end of the 1-and-1 in before finding nothing but net on the second one for the victory.

Clearfield (4-9, 1-5) had taken a 55-54 lead when Elizabeth Peters hit a lay-up and was fouled. Peters, however, missed the free-throw, and the ball went out of bounds giving DuBois the ball back but the length of the floor to go.

Peters’ basket came moments after a jump ball call had retained possession for Clearfield following two missed shots by the Lady Bisons.

DuBois had taken a 54-53 lead on a Leah Wallock 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds left.

Deter’s two free throws capped a DuBois rally from an 11-point third-quarter deficit.

The Lady Beavers trailed 42-31 with 1:30 left in the third quarter thanks to a 13-2 Clearfield run to start the second half. But DuBois was able to end the quarter with a 6-0 run that closed the gap to 42-37 entering the final eight minutes.

Kirsten Wilcox and Rachel Hicks led DuBois with 12 points each, while Leah Wallock added 11. Both Wilcox and Hicks completed double-doubles with 10 and 14 rebounds respectively.

Peters led all scorers with 15 points for Clearfield, while Alanna Luzier and Angela Moore each had 11.

NOTES – Deter’s two made free throws wouldn’t have been needed if DuBois had shot better from the free-throw line. The Lady Beavers connected on just 10 of 26 charity shots in the game … Moore started the game for Madison Sopic, who missed the contest with an illness … Deter’s two free throws were her only points of the game ... DuBois' last D9 League win came Feb. 8, 2006, 59-50 at home over Clearfield. The Lady Beavers last won a D9 League road game Jan. 14, 2005, 63-58 in overtime at Bradford.
