CURWENSVILLE – DuBois Central Catholic hit eight of its first 10 shots including four 3-pointers to build a 14-point lead late in the first half on its way to a 56-42 win at Clearfield Friday night in non-conference girls’ basketball action.

The Lady Cardinals rode the hot shooting to leads of 8-0 and 17-2 early and finished the first quarter 9 of 16 from the floor (56.3 percent).

DCC (8-6) cooled off a bit in the second quarter making only 6 of 18 (33.3 percent) shots but still led 38-22 at halftime. Megan Thomas scored all of her team-high 13 points in the first half including three 3-pointers.

Clearfield (4-10) took the Lady Cardinals long-range shooting away in the third period by extending its zone defense, and that allowed the Lady Bisons to chop the deficit to 40-33 with 2:58 left in the third quarter.

But DCC ended the quarter with a 4-1 spurt to regain a double-digit lead at 44-34 going to the final quarter.

The Lady Cardinals then put the game away with 3-pointers from Andrea Moyer, her second of the game, and Molly Yebernetsky, her third of the contest, in the first 1:35 of the quarter. Miller Hopkins added a free throws, and Nicole Braun a jumper to make it 53-34 with 4:45 to play.  

Clearfield had only one field goal in the final quarter and shot 15 of 53 (28.3 percent) for the game.

DCC, meanwhile, struggled from the floor after the hot start and ended up shooting 37.3 percent (22 of 59) from the floor but nine were 3-pointers, and the Lady Cards outrebounded the Lady Bisons 36-19 with Hopkins, a freshman, leading the way with 10 boards.

Yebernetsky added 11 points for DCC, while Moyer had 10.

Elizabeth Peter matched her career high, set Wednesday against DuBois, with another 15-point effort to lead Clearfield.
