FRILLS CORNERS – Sarah McNellie became the fourth girls’ basketball player and the first since 2001 in Venango Catholic history to score 1,000 career points when she went over the mark in the Lady Vikings 48-39 win at North Clarion.

McNellie, who came into the game needing seven points to reach the milestone, got her 1,000th point on a baseline jumper early in the second quarter. She went on to score 14 points giving her 1,007 in her career. She is the first VC player to reach 1,000 since Theresa Galletta in 2001. Galletta finished her career with 1,145, the second most in school history.

The win was a big one for Venango Catholic (9-7 overall, 7-5 KSAC West), who broke a 2-game losing streak with the victory.

The Lady Vikings used a balanced effort to get the victory with Megan Lutz and Eavan Martin each adding 14 points to McNellie’s 14.

Jamie Zacherl led North Clarion (4-13, 3-9 KSAC East) with 12 points.

NOTES – McNellie was one of two District 9 girls’ players to reach 1,000 career points Thursday. Coudersport’s Jessica Wilson also reached the milestone Thursday. With McNellie and Wilson both going over 1,000 career tallies, there have been seven girls’ and two boys’ basketball players to reach 1,000 career points in District 9 this season … McNellie is the third player at VC to reach 1,000 this year joining Eric Guth and Alex Eckert from the boys’ team … It was the second time this year that an opposing player reached 1,000 career points against North Clarion. East Forest’s Alicia Ponegalek got her 1,000th point vs. the She-Wolves Dec. 7 … May Kay Lynch is the all-time leading scorer in VC history with 1,711 career points in a career that ended in 1981 … McNellie’s 1,007 career points ties her with Jean Ruby (1984) for the third most in school history.
