By Blaise O’Connor SMETHPORT – Smethport placed three players in double figures and moved to 12-5 on the season with a 56-44 victory over Kane Friday evening in Smethport. As usual, the Lady Hubbers were led by senior Diana Phalon who led all scorers with 18 points. Phalon did most of her damage from the free-throw line going a perfect 12-for-12 at the line. She made only two field goals and none after the first quarter. Phalon, though, hasn’t missed a free throw since Dec. 27. Alyssa Cunningham added 13 points and Emma Hahn 11 for Smethport. Kane (11-7) trailed 33-19 in the third quarter but used a 7-0 run to pull within seven points at 33-26. But Cunningham then made the game-changing play when she hit a 3-pointer, was fouled and converted the free throw for a 4-point play and a 37-26 Smethport lead. Kane was plagued by foul trouble the entire game. Bree Bergman, Kane’s leading scorer, fouled out with 7:07 to play after scoring eight points. Chelsea Mague led the Lady Wolves with 15 points. Smethport is back in action Monday at Northern Potter, while Kane hosts Curwensville Thursday. NOTES – Phalon is 69 of 80 (86.3 percent) from the foul line this season and has hit 37 of her last 38 free throws. Her current streak is at least 24 in a row.
