By Dustin Kifer RIMERSBURG – Behind a game-high 28 points from Scott Booth, Union took firm control of the KSAC-East race with a 61-46 come-from-behind win over visiting Karns City Tuesday night. With the victory, the Golden Knights (13-4 overall, 12-2 KSAC-East) have a 2-game lead plus the tie-breaker over second-place Karns City (12-6, 10-4) with five conference games to play. Having the tiebreaker (two wins over Karns City) means Union could lose up to two games even if Karns City runs the table and still win the KSAC-East and play in the Feb. 9 KSAC Title game. After a slow start, Karns City led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, Union took complete control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Gremlins 27-10 including a 7-0 run to open the quarter. The Golden Knights the continued to fly high in the third quarter outscoring Karns City 13-10 to take a 51-35 lead at the end of three quarters. Booth, the leading scorer in District 9 (20.7 ppg going into the night) was the big reason for the charge, as the sophomore hit 10 shots from the field including three treys while also going 5 of 9 from the free-throw line. Neil Scott added 13 points for Union including a 7 of 10 effort from the free-throw line. Cameron Turner led Karns City with 18 points, while Matt McConnell added eight. Both teams return to action Thursday with Union trying to avenge one of its two conference loses when it hosts Clarion and Karns City hosting Butler County rival Moniteau.
