McGary's free throws with 5.4 left win the game for C-Ville; Kalgren scores 32 for Tide including 17 straight

CURWENSVILLE – Ben McGary’s two free throws with 5.4 seconds left in overtime lifted Curwensville to a 62-60 win over West Branch in a Moshannon Valley League game Monday night at Curwensville.

Curwensville (8-11 overall, 3-4 MVL) led 42-36 after three quarters of play, but West Branch (14-5, 3-3) fought back tying the game at 54 on a drive by Chris Beveridge with 25 seconds left in regulation.

David Kalgren, who scored a career-high 32 points for Curwensville including 22 in the second half and overtime, had a chance to win the game with 3.9 seconds left by missed two free throws sending the game to overtime.

West Branch looked like it was going to make Curwensville pay for those missed when it scored the first four points of the extra session to take a 58-54 lead.

But Kalgren redeemed himself hitting back-to-back field goal to tie the game at 58.

The Warriors once again went up by two, 60-58, but Sam Gardner tied the game at 60 with 1:28 left. McGary then hit the two free throws, and West Branch missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key right before the buzzer.

Curwensville led 28-23 at halftime and then outscored West Branch 14-13 in the third quarter with Kalgren scoring all 14 of the Golden Tides points in the frame. Kalgren actually scored 17 straight Curwensville points considering his 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left before halftime made the score 28-23 at the half.

West Branch led 17-16 in the second quarter before Ryan Gardner hit a 3-pointer making it 23-20.

Tyler Ferguson led West Branch with 22 points, while Chris Dotts added 16. McGary chipped in with 11 tallies for Curwensville.

NOTES – It is the second straight game Curwensville has won in the final 10 seconds. Kalgren beat Kane with a layup with eight seconds left Friday night.
