BROOKVILLE – Coudersport’s Kristy Kamper is the 2008 All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 girls’ basketball Player of the Year. Joining Kamper in being honored with individual awards are St. Marys’ Kayla Hoohuli as the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Rookie of the Year and West Forest’s Bob Wachob as the D9sports.com District 9 Coach of the Year. In addition to the three individual awards, the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com first-, second- and third-team All-District teams were also announced Saturday at the Alice R. Kozel Foundation District 9 All-Star game. “Kristy, Kayla and Bob all had excellent seasons in their respective categories,” D9Sports.com co-Editor Chris Rossetti said. “Kristy is a two-year member of the first-team All-District team and has been one of the most consistent players in the district the last two seasons. Kayla is the best freshman in District 9 this decade, no question about it. To lead the district in scoring as a freshman is amazing. Bob Wachob has taken one of the smallest schools in Pennsylvania and turned it into a consistent winner. They won in District 10 and now they are winning in District 9. What he has done in the nearly 30 years as a head coach at West Forest is phenomenal.” It is the ninth edition of the All-District teams and the eighth year that D9Sports.com has hosted the awards. It is also the second straight year that All American Award & Engraving has served as the title sponsor providing all the plaques and certificates that were awarded. The major-award winners along with all the first-team honorees were provided a plaque courtesy of All-American Awards & Engraving, while the second-and third-team honorees received a certificate from All-American Awards & Engraving. “Jim Carroll at All American Awards did a tremendous job with the plaques and certificates again this year,” Rossetti said. “I would encourage anyone who needs this type of work done to give him a call.” NOTES – Both the major award winner and the all-district teams were chosen in a voting by the editorial staff of D9Sports.com after soliciting nominations and information from District 9 coaches, officials, players and fans as well as first-hand accounts of those players … All-American Awards & Engraving is located just outside of Shippenville and can be found on the web at http://www.allamericanawardsandengraving.com/. Coudersport then advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A playoffs. An all-around player, she added 5.9 rebounds, 5.6 steals and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 48 percent from the field. This is the second season that Kamper has been a first-team All-District selection, and she finished her career with 1,345 points, the second most in school history. This year, she scored 20 or more points 15 times including 30 or more three times with a high of 31 twice including in the PIAA playoffs. Last season, she scored a career-high 35 points in a game. She is the first Player of the Year to hail from Coudersport, and she breaks a two-year hold on the award by Union players. ALL
AMERICAN AWARDS & ENGRAVING ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Kayla Hoohuli, Fr., G, St. Marys When you are being compared as a freshman to probably the two greatest girls’ basketball players to ever come out of District 9 - DuBois Central Catholic graduate Sheana Mosch (3,066 career points, 1st in D9 history; went on to play at Duke and is now playing professionally in France) and Coudersport graduate Kim Tingley (2,905 career points, 2nd in D9 history) – the comparison itself should speak volumes. But Hoohuli’s numbers also spoke loud and clear in 2007-08. She led District 9 in scoring at 21.1 points per game while adding 7.1 rebounds. 6.2 steals, 5.0 assists and 3.8 blocks per contest. Her 549 points are believed to be the second most by a District 9 freshman to Mosch, and she actually barely outscored Mosch in per game average in their freshmen seasons averaging 21.11 points per game this past season while Mosch averaged 21.07 points per game. Hoohuli, who is a first-team All-District selection, is the first freshman to earn a first-team All-District nod in the nine years of the award and just the fourth freshman to make any of the All-District teams – Punxsutawney’s Staci Heberling (2002), West Forest’s Geena Sneeringer (2007), Keystone’s Samantha Schwabenbauer (2007 were the other ones. ALL AMERICAN AWARDS & ENGRAVING COACH OF THE YEAR Bob Wachob, West Forest Wachob guided a very young West Forest squad – the Lady Indians started three sophomores and four underclassmen and the lone senior was coming off an ACL tear over the summer – to a 22-7 record and second-place in Class A in District 9. He also captained the Lady Indians to their first PIAA playoff appearance since 1982. West Forest went 21-4 after a 1-3 start, which was due in part to playing without returning All-District third-team member Jackie Lutz, who tore her ACL over the summer and missed the first five games of the season. Wachob just finished his 29th year at West Forest and has a career record of 435-225. 2008
