JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg used a 10-0 run at the end of the third quarter to beat A-C Valley 55-44 in the opening round of the District 9 Class A boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night at Johnsonburg.

The 12th-seeded Falcons (9-14) had tied the game at 27 with 3:53 left in the third quarter on a bucket by Alan Eaton, who scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. But fifth-seeded Johnsonburg (19-6) went on the 10-0 run that was started by a Steve Carnessali basket, included five straight points from Seth Streich, who scored a game-high 29 points to go with 16 rebounds, and was ended by a charity shot from Louie Imbrogno with 1.9 seconds left in the quarter that gave the Ram a 37-27 lead.

That lead never dropped below seven points in the fourth quarter thanks in large part to Johnsonburg going 7 of 10 from the foul line down the stretch.

Carnessali, who got the start in place of Matt Shuey, who injured an ankle in pre-game warm-ups and didn’t play, added 11 points and five rebounds for the Rams.

Blayne McGuirk chipped in 11 for A-C Valley.

Johnsonburg will now travel to fourth-seeded DuBois Central Catholic for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal game Friday. It will mark the fourth meeting of the year between the Rams and the Cardinals and the third since Feb. 7. Johnsonburg leads the season series 2-1 including a 48-41 win in the AML Title Game at St. Marys Saturday and a 56-47 win at DCC Feb. 7. The Cardinals won 62-58 Jan. 9 at Johnsonburg.
