WEST SUNBURY — The Moniteau Warriors continued their late-season surge and played their way into the District 9 Class AA semifinals with a 59-50 win over Brookville in a preliminary round game Tuesday night.

Fourth-seeded Moniteau (10-12), winners of seven of its last eight games and eight of 10, now meets top-seeded Brockway Thursday at Clarion University starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Warriors forced turnovers, got to the foul line and sent the Raiders home for the season with a 3-18 record. Moniteau scored 22 points off 24 Raiders turnovers and had the Raiders playing with foul trouble all night as two starters — Chad Brocious and Jared Heschke — sat out big chunks of time on the bench and eventually fouled out of the game.

In all Moniteau went 20-of-31 from the foul line, led by Tyler Armagost. The senior Warrior scored 18 points and hit 8 of 12 free throws. His younger brother, freshman Kyle, hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 points while Zach Sloan turned in a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Zach McCormick finished with 10 points.

Our strategy the last two months is to take the ball inside, working it and making the officials make the calls,” Moniteau head coach Randy Armagost said. “That’s been our motto the last 10 games — getting the ball inside, being strong, doing ball fakes and kick it outside and have shooters hitting an open shot instead of forcing it. And press. We press back and forth, we don’t let up and we try to get teams to make mistakes.”

Still, the Raiders hung around awhile. They led 13-12 after the first quarter and trailed by just three, 28-25, until the Warriors scored four quick points just before halftime, three coming on a buzzer-beating trey by McCormick to put the Warriors up 32-25.

Moniteau pushed the lead to as many as 10 points at 39-29 on Kyle Armagost’s three with 5:54 left in the third quarter, but the Raiders rallied to within 39-36 on a Kyle Baughman basket with 4:17 left in the third. Moniteau took a 48-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Heschke and Brocious eventually fouled out in the fourth, and the Raiders got within 56-48 on Danny Ion’s three with 4:02 remaining. The Raiders would score just two points the rest of the game on Ryan Zimmerman’s basket with 15 seconds left. Moniteau’s biggest lead of the game was 11 points, 59-48, just before Zimmerman scored.

Ion led the Raiders with 14 points and Brocious finished with 13 despite foul trouble.
