Courier-Express ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic used a strong first quarter to topple Venango Catholic 73-44 in the opening round of the District 9 Class A playoffs Wednesday night at ECC. The sixth-seeded Crusaders raced out to an 18-4 lead at the end of the opening eight minutes and never looked back. Nate Higgins scored a game-high 24 points for ECC (17-7), while Joe Jacobs (13), Robby Wortman (11) and Matt Bauer (10) also reached double digits. District 9’s leading scorer Maxx Rynd led 11th-seeded Venango Catholic (12-11) with 16 points, nearly eight below his average of 23.8 ppg. Parker James threw in eight for the Vikings.
