JOHNSONBURG – Ellie Kocjancic scored 25 points to lead fifth-seeded Johnsonburg to a 59-29 win over visiting East Forest, the 12th seed, in the opening round of the District 9 Class A girls’ playoffs Tuesday night. Kocjancic, who scored 25 points for the second straight game, hit on 9 of 21 shots from the field including a fair of 3-pointers while also going 5 of 7 from the line. She added nine rebounds and four assists. Johnsonburg (17-8) led 10-2 at the end of the first quarter and 27-15 at halftime before outscoring East Forest (9-14) 20-5 in the third quarter. Senior 1,000-point scorer Abby Grumley shook off an apparent ankle injury suffered in the AML Title game Saturday to added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Ramettes, who also got 10 points from Justis Myers. East Forest was plagued by 29 turnovers and poor shooting. The Lady Bears shot just 10 of 50 (20 percent) from the field including 6 of 35 (17.1 percent) from the paint. Erica Long led East Forest with nine points but shot just 2 of 12 from the field. Kelsey Rini added seven points and seven rebounds but was only 3 of 15 shooting, while Ashley Oliver was relatively speaking hot from the floor going 3 of 7 on her way to seven points as well. Johnsonburg now travels to fourth-seeded Austin, a winner of Ridgway Tuesday, for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal game Thursday.
