BROOKVILLE — Brynna Hetrick scored 21 points and dished out six assists as the Brookville Lady Raiders rallied from deficits of seven and eight points in a 57-44 win over Keystone in the District 9 Class AA preliminary round Wednesday night.

It’s the fourth straight year that the Lady Raiders won the No. 4-No. 5 game as a fourth seed, thus the fourth time they’ll get a shot at the top-seeded team in the semifinals. For the second straight year, it’ll be Cranberry Tuesday night at Clarion High School at 8 p.m.

Last year, Cranberry beat Brookville, 44-37, before losing to Karns City in the finals. The Lady Raiders lost to eventual champion Karns City in 2006 and 2007.

This is what we’ve done for four years now. We’ve been in the 4-5 game, we’ve won it and faced the No. 1 seed each year and it’s come down to the wire,” Brookville head coach Mark Powell said. “I’m hoping for the same thing and I think we have a recipe that gives us a chance to win. The kids will bring the effort, it’s a matter of the kids knocking the shots down.”

Against Keystone, the Lady Raiders did when they had to. They were trailing 25-17 with 1:23 left in the first half when Hetrick hit two threes the rest of the way, the second just inside the halfcourt line to cut Keystone’s halftime lead to 25-23.

Keystone built the lead back up again to 35-28 by the 5:00 mark of the third quarter, but the Lady Raiders closed the quarter with a 16-2 run that put them up 44-37 going into the fourth quarter. It was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.

Kate Reinsel scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting for the Lady Raiders while Janelle Mescall scored 12 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Amanda Liebman came off the bench to score all of her season-high seven points in the first half.

Keystone’s 1,000-point scoring junior Samantha Schwabenbauer finished with 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers, but her picking up a fourth foul with 3:57 left in the third quarter was a big boost for the Brookville surge in the quarter.

“Sam’s obviously the center of our team and we talked about this,” Keystone head coach Lana Graham said. “Any team we’re playing is going to focus on her to shut her down. We’ve got other girls who have to step up, which we’ve had in the past, and that’s why we were here tonight.

“They look for her out on the court, but when you don’t have her out there, panic sometimes sets in and that’s one thing we’ll have to work on for next year.”

Schwabenbauer eventually fouled out late in the game with the Lady Raiders already celebrating a solid playoff effort.

“The plan was to try to create some easy buckets tonight,” Powell said. “We hoped that would get us above that 40-point barrier. I’m not sure if it was the turnovers or converting on easy shots in second half that got us there, but the plan was to try to score off pressure.”

NOTES: Brookville improved to 13-9 while Keystone finished at 10-13. … Natalie Hartman scored eight of her 11 points in the third quarter and Molly Wise finished with 10 points for two other double-figure scorers for the Lady Panthers. … Despite being outrebounded 19-12 with 10 turnovers by halftime, the Lady Raiders tied Keystone with 30 rebounds and turned the ball over just five times in the second half. … The 13-point win was just the second double-digit win for Brookville this year. The Lady Raiders beat DuBois Central Catholic, 53-40, on Feb. 4. … The 57 points was the second-most points scored this year by the Lady Raiders. In games they’ve scored 50 or more points, they’re 6-0. … This will be the sixth Brookville-Cranberry meeting since Cranberry joined District 9 in the 2004-05 season. Cranberry holds a 4-1 edge, the only Brookville win coming in a 57-48 victory in 2006. The Berries have won the last three games, including twice last year.
