CLARION – Parker Herrington’s 16 points along with a stifling defensive effort led Clearfield to the District 9 Class AAA Championship with a 49-37 over St. Marys Saturday afternoon at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

“We’re happy with the win,” said Clearfield head coach Forrest Campman.  “We know we didn’t play that great but at this point of the year winning is more important than how you play.”

Trailing 20-16 at halftime, the Bisons (22-2) came out on a 23-7 run that extended into the fourth quarter with Herrington scoring seven of the 23. A Matt Shiner three ball capped the run and made it 39-26 with 5:56 remaining in the game.

“Anybody will tell you that you have to have your scorers and your rebounders but good teams have to have a good point guard,” said Campman. “Parker in my personal opinion is the best point guard in the district.”

St. Marys (13-10) cut the lead to nine on a Shealin Mulcahy jumper with 4:03 left but got no closer as the Bison kept the pressure on with a Herrington layup and a three from Trey Campman.

The Clearfield defense was relentless, especially in the second half, forcing the Dutch into 16 turnovers.

“The one thing that has been our strength all year has been defense,” Campman said.  “I thought our defense gave them trouble throughout the game.”

Trailing 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, St. Marys went on a 9-0 run that was capped by a Levi Welder layup to go up 17-13.  Herrington spent the duration of the run on the bench with three fouls before being reinserted into the lineup with 2:29 to play in the half.

Campman finished with nine points for the Bison while Shiner added eight and Cruise Kerr 10 rebounds.

Welder led the Dutch with 15 points and eight rebounds while Brett Quiggle finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

With the win the Bison move on to play in the first round of the PIAA playoffs against the No. five seed out of District 7.  St. Marys will now move into a play-in game against the No. three seed out of District 10.

“We are excited to be one of 32 teams still alive and look forward to representing our district well,” Campman said.
