KANE – Delanie Cowburn’s driving layup with 1:06 remaining gave third-seeded Coudersport the lead for good, as the defending District 9 Class A girls’ champions knocked off second-seeded West Forest 60-55 in a rematch of last season’s title game Tuesday night in the semifinals at Kane High School.

For three quarters it was a defensive struggle between the two teams, but in the fourth quarter the offensives heated up with the team combining to score 54 points after scoring 61 in the first three quarters combined. Coudersport (22-2) had the advantage in the quarter outscoring West Forest 31-23 in the frame to erase a 32-29 deficit entering the quarter and advance to its fourth straight D9 Class A title game and its eighth in nine years. It was the 20th straight win for the Lady Falcons.

“The fourth quarter was a blur,” Coudersport head coach Brian Green said. “We would get a three- or four-point lead, but West Forest kept coming back. That’s how the fourth quarter went.”

Coudersport held West Forest’s Geena Sneeringer, the second-leading scorer in District 9 at 22.1 ppg, to 10 points. But the Lady Indians (23-3) got contributions from other players including 17 from Erica Blum, who had 13 in the fourth quarter, and 14 from Alyssa Dreihaup.

“We held Geena Sneeringer to 10 points, but other players like Erica Blum really stepped up for West Forest,” Green said. “The game came down to who executed the best in the final minutes. Kayla Bohn and (Delanie) Cowburn each had big second halves for us when we really needed them.”

Cowburn scored all 12 of her points in the second half, while Bohn had 16 of her 19 points in the half. Bohn also led the Lady Falcons with eight rebounds, including two crucial rebounds off her own free-throw misses in the final minutes.

Coudersport will take on Elk County Catholic in the District 9 Class A title game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym. The Lady Falcons are looking for their 13th District 9 title since 1990.  West Forest will take on Austin in the consolation game to decide the third-place team in District 9 at a site, time and day to be determined.

NOTES – Both Coudersport and West Forest have qualified for the PIAA playoffs … Coudersport beat West Forest 65-38 in last year’s District 9 title game.
