By Chris Rossetti CLARION – Greensburg Salem outscored Clearfield 39-25 in the second half to get a 66-56 win over the Bisons in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA boys’ basketball playoffs Friday night at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym. The Lions (20-5) trailed 31-27 at halftime but scored 17 points off 11 Clearfield turnovers in the second half to get the win. Clearfield (22-3) had rallied from a five-point second-half deficit to take a 46-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Jarrin Campman two minutes into the fourth quarter. And the Bisons still led by two, 46-44, with 5:12 to play when they got called for a five-second violation when trying to inbound the ball under their own basket. Moments later, Clearfield’s Trey Campman was whistled for a foul on what appeared to be a box out on Greensburg Salem’s Chris Klimchock following a Klimchock 3-point attempt. But it was ruled that Campman had actually fouled Klimchock during the act of shooting, and the Greensburg Salem senior point guard proceeded to hit all three free throws kick starting an 18-6 run that gave the Lions a 62-52 lead with 1:08 to play. Klimchock was a big factor during the run, which actually was 20-6 when you count his layup with 5:26 to play that cut the Clearfield lead to 46-44, scoring nine of his 20 points during the spurt while also dishing out three of his game-high eight assists during the run. In all, Klimchock scored 13 points in the fourth quarter including hitting 11 of 12 free throws in the quarter. Meanwhile, Clearfield scored just two baskets between the six-minute mark and the one-minute mark. The game started out well for Clearfield with the Bisons leading 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and 25-18 with 3:23 to play in the first half. But Greensburg Salem went on a 9-4 run to close to within two, 29-27, on a Gus Marino 3-pointer with 2:01 left before halftime before Cruise Kerr’s layup at the first-half horn gave Clearfield the 31-27 halftime lead. That lead was short lived, as Greensburg Salem started the second half on an 11-4 run to take a 38-33 lead when Klimchock scored on a layup with 5:09 to play in the third quarter. Clearfield fought back closing the gap to 42-40 by the end of the quarter, and then the Bisons retook the lead, 43-42, on a Jarrin Campman 3-pointer 41 seconds into the fourth quarter. Matt Shiner led Clearfield with 15 points despite picking up three first-half fouls and a fourth infraction in the third quarter. Jarrin Campman added 14 points, while Parker Herrington had nine and Trey Campman eight. Jake Matthews paced Greensburg Salem with 24 points including five 3-pointers. Bobby Davis added 10 points and 12 rebounds.
