PITTSBURGH – Lauren Savulchak scored 19 points to lead WPIAL champion North Catholic to a 61-20 win over District 9’s fourth-place team, Austin, in the opening round of the PIAA Class A girls’ basketball playoffs Saturday afternoon at Gateway High School. North Catholic used an 18-4 second-quarter advantage to take a 29-12 halftime lead and then outscored Austin 32-8 in the second half. The Lady Panthers were in deep foul trouble, as leading scorer Whitney Crosby had two fouls called on her in the first quarter and third early in the second quarter and fouled out with six minutes to go after scoring just two points although she did have five rebounds and three assists. Emily Wambaugh also had two first-quarter fouls, while freshman guard Katelyn Valenti left the game in the second quarter with an injury and didn’t return.
