CLARION – Nate Higgins scored his 1,000th career point during Elk County Catholic’s 67-62 overtime win over Union-New Castle in the opening round of the PIAA Class A boys’ playoffs Friday night.

Higgins, who had 206 points as a freshman at St. Marys in 2006, has 1,013 career points including 807 in three years at ECC. He scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds in the win over Union-New Castle and hit the 1,000-point mark on a layup with 5:50 left in the third quarter that gave ECC at 35-25 lead. Higgins scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Higgins is the sixth player to reach the 1,000-point mark while wearing an ECC uniform, although technically speaking he is not a 1,000-point scorer at ECC because of the 206 points at St. Marys. St. Marys has had eight players reach 1,000 career points including Levi Welder this season.
