By Chris Rossetti DUBOIS – Bishop Guilfoyle used a 21-0 run that was sandwiched between halftime to get a 45-32 win over Elk County Catholic in the second round of the PIAA Class A girls’ basketball playoffs Wednesday night at DuBois Middle School. ECC (27-2) led 16-14 with 6:47 left in the first half after Kaitlyn Geci hit one of two free throws following a technical foul called on Bishop Guilfoyle. But that was the last point the Lady Crusaders scored in the half and the last point they got until 1:15 into the second half, a span of 8:02. In the meantime, Bishop Guilfoyle (27-1) scored the final 17 points of the first half and the first four of the second half to take a 35-16 lead. The Lady Marauders run actually became 25-2 midway through the third quarter giving them their biggest lead of the game at 39-18. ECC tried to rally cutting the deficit to 16, 40-24, at the end of the third quarter and then starting the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to get within 11, 40-29. But the Lady Crusaders could never get that deficit under 10 points. Turnovers played a big role in Bishop Guilfoyle’s game-changing run. The Lady Marauders turned eight ECC second-quarter turnovers into 12 points while scoring 18 points in the game off turnovers. Bishop Guilfoyle junior Alli Williams, who is listed at 5-11 but looks and plays bigger than that, also played a key role scoring a game-high 22 points including 11 in the second quarter, while completing the double-double with 11 rebounds. She also had five steals, three blocked shots and three steals. Rachel Rea added 11 points and Kaleigh Floyd had nine points. Emily Detsch had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead ECC, which saw a 21-game win streak end. Bre Grimone added seven points and five rebounds, while Kaitlyn Geci added five points. Bishop Guilfoyle will now face Tussey Mountain in the quarterfinals Saturday at a time and place to be announced.
