ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen opened their 2008-2009
season with a hard-fought 67-61 victory over the Johnsonburg Rams Friday night at the “Dutch Oven” in St.
Marys. The senior trio of Brett Quiggle, Levi Welder and Matt Guido led the
way for the Dutch, pouring in 19 points apiece. Welder added 12
rebounds to record a double-double. Quiggle was 5 of 7 from beyond the
three point arc. Leading the way for the Rams was Ren Yonker with a game-high 30 points
that included 6 three-pointers. At the onset, it was the Yonker and Seth Streich show.
The Rams built a 14-9 first-quarter lead and went into the locker room with a four-point advantage, 29-25.
Yonker had 13 and Streich 9 at the half. Quiggle kept the
Dutchmen in the game by adding 12 of his own on four three-pointers. In the second half, Welder and Guido led the Dutch comeback.
Guido finished with 15 points in the second half, hitting five big free throws down the stretch. Welder
kicked in 12, as the Dutch captured the lead at the end of the third quarter, 43-41, and never looked back. St. Marys, 1-0, returns to action Monday night as they host Coudersport
in a non-league matchup. Johnsonburg, 0-1, travels to Elk County
Catholic on Tuesday to open their Allegheny Mountain North League season against the 1-0 Crusaders. ST. MARYS 67, JOHNSONBURG 61 Scoring:
