ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen used their quickness and senior leadership Monday at the "Dutch Oven" to run past the visiting Coudersport 81-55 in a non-league matchup.

Brett Quiggle led five Dutchmen in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Levi Welder had 17 along with seven rebounds and five blocks, Greg Simchick added 14 tallies, Shealin Mulcahy had 11 points and Matt Guido contributed 10.

Brett Whitman and Nate Minor led Coudersport with 12 points each.

The Dutchmen opened the game on a 5-0 run as Mulcahy hit a three-pointer and short jumper. The Falcons cut the lead to 5-4 on baskets by Eric Babcock and Nate Minor. That is as close as the Falcons would get the rest of the night. The Dutch went on a 4-0 run to open a 9-4 lead en route to a 27-18 lead after one quarter of play.

St. Marys then got defensive in the second quarter going to a full court press and holding the Falcons to only 11 points while increasing their lead to 48-28 at the intermission. The Dutch had three players in double figures at the half, Quiggle, Welder and Simchick.

In the second half St. Marys opened its lead to as many as 31 points, 72-41, at the start of the fourth period.

“It was real nice to be able to run our offense effectively tonight,” St. Marys head coach Brice Benson said. “Friday, against Johnsonburg, we had 12 turnovers in the first half and trailed by four at the half. Tonight, we were able to play an up-tempo game while not committing those costly turnovers. We were also able to get of our young players valuable playing time in the fourth quarter thanks to the big cushion.”

St. Marys, now 2-0, heads to the road for the first time this season when it visits the Port Allegheny Gators Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Coudersport, 0-2, plays its home opener Wednesday night when it hosts Wellsville, NY.
