ST. MARYS – St. Marys put the D9 League on notice Tuesday night that there might be a new player in the championship hunt knocking off defending champion Bradford 71-57 in the league opener for both teams at the “Dutch Oven” in St. Marys. Either Bradford or Elk County Catholic has won or shared the league title for each of the nine years, and only DuBois (tying ECC in 2000) has even thought about crashing the party. But St. Marys (4-0 overall, 1-0 D9 League) outscored the Owls (3-2, 0-1) 39-23 in the middle two quarters to beat Bradford for just the second time in the D9Sports.com era (2000-2001-present). “This was a big step in the right direction for us tonight,” St. Marys head coach Brice Benson said. “Bradford is traditionally a very tough opponent, and to get a win to open league play is huge. Now, Friday night we travel to Clearfield to take on a very good Bison quad in a key early season matchup.” The senior trio of Matt Guido, Levi Welder and Brett Quiggle once again led the Dutch. Guido (21 points, 11 assists) and Welder (20 points, 17 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles, while Quiggle added 19 points and five steals. St. Marys looked like it was going to pull away early jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter. But Bradford fought back ending the quarter on a 7-0 spurt to tie the game at 11. Cody Coats scored six of the seven points for the Owls during the stretch. St. Marys, however, held the Owls to just eight second quarter points while outscoring Bradford 15-8 in the quarter to take a 26-19 halftime lead. The Dutch then stretched the lead to as many as 18 points in the second half. Drew Kelly led Bradford with 15 points, while Tyler Grandy added 10. Both teams are on the road Friday with St. Marys at Clearfield and Bradford at Punxsutawney. ST.
