CLEARFIELD – In a game that lived up to the pre-season hype, unbeaten Clearfield knocked of previously undefeated St. Marys 65-63 in a key early season District 9 match-up at the Clearfield gymnasium Saturday. St. Marys (4-1 overall, 1-1 D9 League) led early in the fourth quarter before Clearfield (2-0, 1-0) took the lead for good, 63-59, on four consecutive free throws by Matt Shiner. The Dutch cut the lead to 65-63 with 6.6 second remaining and got a key rebound on a missed free throw by the Bisons, but freshman Justin Quiggle’s open three-pointer bounced off the front of the rim giving Clearfield the hard-fought victory. Clearfield led 19-13 after the first quarter thanks to seven points from Jarrin Campman, but St. Marys rallied with 22 second-quarter points behind the hot hand of senior big man Levi Welder, whose 13 first-half points held give the Dutch a 35-30 lead at the halfway point. Clearfield cut the deficit to 51-48 at the end of three quarters before taking the lead in the fourth. A balanced effort paced the Bisons with Parker Herrington scoring 19, Campman 18 and Shiner 16. That helped offset a monster game from Welder, who had 33 points, 20 rebounds and five blocked shots. But Brett Quiggle was the only other Dutchman to hit double figures finishing with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Both teams are back in action Tuesday. Clearfield travels to Bradford, while St. Marys stays on the road at Brookville. CLEARFIELD 65, ST.
