ST. MARYS – The
St. Marys Flying Dutchmen, up by as many as 21 in the third quarter, held off a late DuBois rally to get a 62-57 D9
league win Monday night at the “Dutch Oven” in St. Marys. The Dutchmen extended their lead to 17 at halftime, 39-22, outscoring the Beavers 18-8 in the second quarter. Senior Jon Petrocchi led the charge, scoring 17 of his career high 19 points in the first half. “Jon did a real nice job tonight,” St. Marys head coach Bryce Benson said. “ Brett Quiggle and Levi Welder got into some foul trouble early in the second quarter, and Jon stepped up and made some big buckets for us early.” DuBois, 2-9 overall and 1-4 in league play, started to come alive after the intermission outscoring St. Marys by one in the third quarter behind the shooting of Jordan LaBue, who scored nine points in the frame. Then the Beavers really turned up the heat in the fourth quarter. Cody Schalk scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the quarter as DuBois twice cut the lead to three points with less than two minutes to go. The Beavers were then forced to foul sending Matt Guido and Brett Quiggle to line to shoot one-and-ones in the minute. They responded by making all four free throw to preserve the Dutch victory. Guido recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Quiggle added 15 points and Welder 11 tallies. LaBue finished with 12 points and Garrett Peterson added 10. DuBois travels to St. Marys returns to action Wednesday night when they travel to Punxsutawney to play the Chucks in a key D9 League game for both squads.
