Courier-Express CLEARFIELD – Elk County Catholic erased a 6-point halftime deficit and broke its two-game losing streak with a 48-38 win over previously unbeaten Clearfield in a battle of RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com District 9 Top 10 boys’ teams Tuesday night in Clearfield. The ninth-ranked Crusaders (9-3 overall, 3-2 D9 League) trailed 22-16 at halftime but outscored the third-ranked Bisons (7-1, 3-1) 32-16 in the second half including 17-6 in the fourth quarter to avoid losing three games in a row for the first time since 1999. ECC started its comeback in the third quarter by outscoring Clearfield 15-10 to cut the lead to 32-31 and then continued the momentum into the fourth quarter. Nate Higgins led ECC with 16 points, while Robby Wortman had 12. Jarrin Campman was the lone Bison in double figures with 19, while Matt Shiner added nine. The 38 points were nearly 33 less than Clearfield’s season averaging. The Bisons came into the game averaging 70.9 points per game, and their previous low was 55 in a 55-53 win over Freeport. ECC, meanwhile, has allowed fewer than 60 points in all 12 games this season and it was the fifth opponent the Crusaders have held to under 40 points. ECC is allowing an average of just 44.3 points per game but is only scoring 54.3 points per contest. Clearfield returns to action Friday when it travels to fourth-ranked St. Marys, while ECC hosts Brookville Friday. NOTES - Clearfield is the second Top 3 team to go down at home in two nights. No. 2 Keystone lost to No. 8 Punxsutawney Monday night ... ECC hadn't lost two in a row since 2003 before losing twice last week to Punxsutawney and St. Marys.
