AUSTIN – Behind a balanced scoring effort, the Austin girls’ basketball team won an emotional 43-34 decision over visiting Cameron County Friday night.

The game was played with heavy hearts for the Lady Panthers, who lost 15-year old classmate Trevor Dynda in a snowmobile accident Wednesday night. The death caused the postponement of the Cameron County-Austin boys’ game Thursday. And neither the boys’ nor the girls’ team practice Thursday.  Prior to the girls’ game Friday night, a moment of silence was held in honor of Dynda and there wasn’t a dry eye in the building on either side as the death brought back the recent memory of the death of a Cameron County student in the fall.

Riding the wave of emotion, Austin raced out to an 11-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and still led 20-14 at halftime. Cameron County fought back in the third quarter cutting the deficit to five, 31-26, at the end of the quarter. But Austin outscored the Lady Raiders 12-8 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Emily Wambaugh paced the Lady Panthers with 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. Whitney Crosby added eight points and 11 rebounds, and Cassey Stuckey had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Shelby Summers led Cameron County with nine points, while Kelsey Canton and Bre Dunsmore each added nine. Molly Fragale chipped in with five points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Raiders.
