Wolves top Crusaders for first time since 1999-2000 season.

KANE – Kane outscored visiting Elk County Catholic 26-5 in the second quarter to grab a 61-52 win over the Crusaders in AML-North boys’ basketball action Monday night.

ECC (10-4 overall, 2-2 AML-North) actually outscored the Wolves (9-5, 2-2) 47-35 in the other three quarters, but the 21-point second-quarter difference was too much for the Crusaders to overcome.

Kane, which beat ECC for the first time since a 56-54 win during the 1999-2000 season and for just the 15^th time in 89 meetings, trailed 12-7 at the end of the first quarter before the 26-point explosion gave the Wolves a commanding 33-17 halftime lead.

Arie Paup led Kane with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Bert Leonard and Cory Waigand each chipped in with 15 points.

Nate Higgins was the lone ECC player to reach double figures with 19 points, and nine of those came from the free-throw line where he went 9 of 16.

NOTES – ECC has lost two AML league games for the first time since going 6-4 in 2002-03. The Crusaders lost a combined total of two games from 2004-2008 … Five of Kane’s 15 wins vs. ECC have come since the 1997-98 season. The Crusaders are 74-14 all-time vs. Kane including 1-1 this year. ECC had won 18 straight games over Kane, the second-longest win streak for the Crusaders over the Wolves. ECC won 30 straight from 1981-82 to 1997-98 before Kane answered with four straight victories.
