ST. MARYSSeniors Brett Quiggle and Levi Welder made sure Wednesday night that the Dutch losing streak ended at three games, as they scored a combined 63 points in an 85-75 non-league win over the visiting Kane Wolves Wednesday night at the “Dutch Oven” in St. Marys.

Quiggle scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed 8 rebounds and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Welder pitched in with 27 points, including five 3-pointers and grabbed 12 boards to record his eighth double-double of the season.

After the two teams battled to a 14-14 tie after the first quarter, the Dutch outscored the Wolves 25-11 in the second period behind 12 points from Welder and eight from Quiggle to take a 39-25 halftime lead.

St. Marys kept up the aggressive pace, scoring more than 20 points in each of the final three quarters, opening up a 20 point lead at one point in the third quarter, 72-52, before the Wolves battled back late to make a 10-point final deficit.

Kane put four players in double figures, led by Cory Waigand with 19 points. Bert Leonard added 15 and Arie Paup and Zach Smith each finished with 12 apiece.

St. Marys, now 9-5 overall, returns to action Friday night hosting D9 league opponent Brookville.

Kane, 9-6, returns to AML-North league play Friday when they travel to Sheffield.

Game notes: The Dutch overcame their recent shooting slump hitting 29 of 62 shots from the field (46.8%)…St. Marys committed 15 turnovers, down from 28 their previous game…Quiggle’s 36 points oddly enough included only one 3-pointer … Quiggle’s 36 points also marked the 18th time in the D9Sports.com Era (2000-01 to present) that a Dutch player has reached 30 points in a game but it ties for the second most points by a St. Marys player during that stretch. Louis Pisani scored 36 Dec. 12, 2006, and Pisani hit for 38 17 days later.
