RIMERSBURG – Neil Scott’s old-school 3-point play with two seconds left on the clock gave Union a 61-58 win over visiting Karns City in a game that saw Union’s Scott Booth become the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

The game was tied at 58 when Scott, who ended with a game-high 23 rebounds, grabbed an offensive board off a miss, put it back, was fouled and hit the free-throw to give the Golden Knights the win.

Booth, a junior who entered the game needing 34 points to reach 1,000, got the milestone in the fourth quarter when he hit two key free throws on his way to a game-high 35 points, the sixth time in his career he has topped 30.

Karns City was on fire most of the night hitting nine 3-pointers on its way to a season-high in points. It was only the second time this year the Gremlins have cracked 50 points and just the third time they had reached 40.

Union trailed 53-47 going to the fourth quarter but outscored the Gremlins 14-5 in the final eight minutes.

Brandon Collier led Karns City with 24 points including six 3-pointers, while Evan Olszak added 15 points.

Scott chipped in seven for Union with Logan Mortimer adding 10 points and seven assists.

NOTES - Booth is the first Union player to top 1,000 career points since Kyle Hilliard, the school's all-time leading scorer, did it in 2006. Hilliard's school record 1,299 points would seem to be in major jeopardy as long as Booth, the nephew of Union head coach Karen Davis and the son of assistant coach Gary Booth, stays healthy ... Booth's 1,001 points puts him six behind Don Eustice for seventh in school history. Eustice, who graduated in 1981, had 1,007. Troy Heeter is sixth at 1,052 and Eric Buzzard is fifth at 1,058.
