MARIENVILLE – East Forest’s Kelsey Rini became the second District 9 player this season to top 1,000 career points when she netted 16 Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to help the Lady Bears get past Brockway which pulled out a 50-46 win on the road.
Rini came into the game needing 14 points to become the seventh player in East Forest girls’ history to reach 1,000 career points and accomplished the feat Thursday despite shooting just 4 of 21 from the field. She hit 8 of 16 free throws and also pulled down a game-high 22 rebounds.
Brockway (6-7), though, got 16 points from Jalina Sabatose and 12 from Leanne Holt to pick up the victory.
Neither team shot well, as East Forest (6-8) connected on 14 of 58 shots (24.1 percent) and Brockway 18 of 70 (25.7 percent). The Lady Rovers were able to take advantage of 22 East Forest turnovers.
Ashley Oliver added 13 points on 3 of 15 shooting while also pulling in six rebounds and handing out four assists for East Forest.
Michelle Mancuso added eight points for Brockway, and Sarah Anderson had seven.
NOTES – Rini, who has 1,002 career points, is 38 points shy of tying Stacy Kiehl for sixth in school history in scoring and 87 points behind Nicole Baines. She is the second East Forest player to reach 1,000 points in the last two seasons. Former teammate Alicia Ponegalek reached the mark last year on her way to becoming the school’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,274 points. Gretchen Gregg (2004) is the all-time leading scorer with 1,688 points. Six of East Forest’s seven 1,000-point girls’ scorers have come since 2002 and all seven have come since Nicole Baines (1,089 points) became the first to achieve the mark in 1995 … The other District 9 player to reach 1,000 points this season also resides in Forest County. West Forest junior Geena Sneeringer hit the mark in December and has 1,174 points through Thursday.
