ST. MARYS
– Three District 9 girls’ basketball players went over 1,000 career points Friday with one of them doing it in
a near-record setting pace. St. Marys
sophomore Kayla Hoohuli became the first sophomore since DuBois Central Catholic’s Sheena Mosch to top the
1,000-point barrier when she scored 25 points in a 60-20 win at DuBois Friday, Sheffield’s Amanda Craker topped
the mark with a 24-point effort in a 50-45 loss at Ridgway and Kane’s Bree Bergman became the second girls’
player in school history to hit the mark when she had 11 points in a 46-40 win over DuBois Central Catholic. HOOHULI 2ND
FASTEST D9 PLAYER TO 1,000 CAREER POINTS Hoohuli, who
has 1,003 career points including 454 this year, reached the 1,000-point mark in just 43 games, the second fewest
games it has ever taken a District 9 girls’ player to reach 1,000 points. Coudersport’s Kim Tingley reached the
mark in just 42 games in 1995 on her way to 2,905 career points, the second most in District 9 history. Hoohuli is
actually ahead of the pace of Mosch, the all-time leading scorer in D9 history with 3,066 career tallies. It took
Mosch 45 games to reach 1,000 career points. Hoohuli
reached the magic number with a 3-pointer late in the first half. She is the sixth St. Marys girls’ player to
reach 1,000 career points and the first since Audra Huggler did so in 2004. Kali Carnovale is the all-time leading
scorer in St. Marys history with 1,418 points, 415 ahead of Hoohuli. As for the
game itself, St. Marys led 25-2 at the end of the first quarter and 45-9 at halftime to improve to 16-1 on the
season. CRAKER FIRST
SHEFFIELD PLAYER TO HIT 1,000 SINCE 2005 Craker,
meanwhile, became the first Sheffield girls’ player to reach 1,000 career points since Jessica Wagner did it in
2004, as a junior. Wagner is the all-time scoring leader at Sheffield with 1,655 points. Craker has 1,004 points. Craker, who
has 1,004 career points, had a double-double in the game adding 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to help
Sheffield overcome 15 points from Bekka Leitzel and 13 from Emily Mitchell. Ridgway led
18-9 at the end of the first quarter and 31-22 at halftime before Sheffield rallied in the second half outscoring
the Lady Elkers 23-19, but it wasn’t enough. Free-throw
shooting cost Sheffield. The Lady Wolverines were just 7 of 22 from the charity stripe on the night, including a 4
of 16 performance from Craker. BERGMAN BECOMES JUST SECOND KANE GIRLS’ PLAYER TO 1,000 Bergman,
meanwhile, joined Jessica McDivitt (1,037 points) as just the second Kane girls’ player to reach 1,000 career
points in the win over DCC. Needing four points to reach 1,000, she hit the mark early in the first quarter.
Bergman now has 1,007 career tallies. As for the
game itself, Kane led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter before finding itself tied at 22
at halftime thanks to Ashley Wilson’s buzzer beating shot. DCC then
looked liked it had taken control of the game in the third quarter hitting four 3-pointers while building a
10-point lead. But Kane rallied to within four, 35-31, by the end of the third quarter and then outscored the Lady
Cardinals 15-5 in the fourth quarter to get the victory. Most of the Lady Wolves points in the final eight minutes
came from the free-throw line where they were 11 of 15. Free throws were really the difference in the game with
Kane going 24 of 35 from the line and DCC just 4 of 10. Bergman
added eight rebounds for Kane, while Chelsea Mague had eight points and Natalie Kossack seven. Andrea Saquin
chipped in with six points and nine steals. Julianne
Heasley and Lauresa Gulvas each had eight points to lead DCC. ST. MARYS-DUBOIS BOX SCORE (Courtesy of the DuBois
