BRADFORD – The Bradford Owls used a stifling full-court man-to-man defense to force 27 Brookville turnovers in a 58-34 Senior Night win at Bradford.

Senior guard Cory Viola, who only measures 5-foot-6, continued his outstanding play since being inserted into the starting lineup three games ago by recording a double-double with 19 points and 10 steals.

“Cory has really been a shot in the arm for our team,” Bradford head coach Dave Fuhrman said. “He is very quick and has quick hands. He has really forced our opponents into a lot of turnovers, which have led to some easy baskets for us. He has also been able to get to the basket with some driving layups, which has helped our offense too.”

Bradford took advantage of a lack of depth for Brookville to wear down the Blue Raiders, who have decided to enter the District 9 Class AA playoffs despite a woeful 3-13 overall record including 0-9 in the D9 League. Brookville has lost seven straight and 13 of 14.

“Brookville’s depth has really taken a hit with some key injuries as of late, so our game plan was to extend the floor and try to wear them down with our depth,” Fuhrman said. “I think we were successful. We didn’t shoot it particularly well, and we weren’t real efficient in our half-court offense, but our defense carried us tonight.”

Pug Fuhrman chipped in 13 points, while Ryan Mackey had eight points and 10 rebounds for Bradford.

Chad Brocious led Brookville with 17 points.

Bradford, 10-8 overall, 5-5 in D9 League and winners of three straight, will host DuBois Central Catholic in a rare late-season inter-class matchup of perennial District 9 powers Monday.

“DCC is very talented and well coached,” Fuhrman said. “So it will be a great test for us to see how much we have improved as we get ready for the final stretch of the regular season the playoffs.

“ I’m really enjoying this team and the improvement we have made since the start of the season has been very gratifying for me to watch. I’m anxious to see what we can accomplish down the stretch and in the playoffs.”
