Matt Bauer had 10 points to lead ECC.

ST. MARYS The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen started out strong, but it was the Elk County Catholic Crusaders who finished strong outscoring St. Marys by 15 points over the final three quarters of play to score a 44-40 D9 league win over the visiting Dutchmen in a Saturday afternoon matinee at the Aaron Straub Gymnasium at Elk County Catholic High School.

St. Marys jumped out to leads of 12-0 and 14-3 to end the first quarter of play but couldnt hold on for the win.  Early on, Brett Quiggle and Levi Welder found their groove, scoring five and seven points respectively in the quarter.

But Crusader Coach Aaron Straub changed his squads offensive strategy between quarters and it worked well in the second stanza as ECC won the quarter 16-9 to trail by only four, 23-19, at the half.  The Crusaders hit seven field goals in the second quarter as six players scored after only getting only a 3-pointer from Robbie Wortman in the first quarter.

In the second half, turnovers once again spelled defeat for the Dutchmen, as they had 10 of their 15 after the intermission.

Matt Bauer led the ECCs offense with 10 points.  Tony Chiodo, Joe Jacob and Wortman all finished with seven each.  Nate Higgins, the Crusaders leading scorer, was held to just five points.

For St. Marys, Welder finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 8 blocks. Quiggle tallied 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

ECC, now 15-6 overall and 8-3 in D9, plays next in the AML semifinals when they travel to Dubois Central Catholic.

St. Marys, 12-7 overall and 7-4 in D9, heads to Johnsonburg to play the Rams Tuesday night.
