By Fred Kavelak CURWENSVILLE - On a night when Bree Bergman became the Kane girls’
basketball program's all-time leading scorer, the Lady Wolves had to overcome winless Curwensville's best effort of
the season to escape with a 43-34 overtime win Friday. Bergman surpassed 1998 graduate Jessica McDivitt's 1,037 total with her eighth
point of the Fight Cancer Night game, a free throw with 6:03 remaining. The 5-10 senior finished with 10 points and
now has 1,040 career tallies. Kane, which made only 5 of 45 shots (11.1 percent) in the first three
quarters, fought an uphill battle throughout regulation, leading only 4-3 late in the first period and 28-27 with
5:15 to go. The Lady Wolves needed putbacks by Drew Victory with 21 seconds
left and Ashley Wilson with five seconds remaining to force overtime. After Kalie Walter broke the 34-34 tie on a baseline jumper 11
seconds into the extra period, senior guard Chelsea Mague scored the final seven points. She made it
38-34 with a long jumper with 3:00 on the clock and then canned five of eight free throws in the last 1:30 “It was a tough one, but I’m glad to pull it out,” Kane head
coach Dave Kiehl said. “We had another terribly cold shooting night (13 of 77, 16.9 percent). Ashley Wilson had
the putback to tie it up, and we got new life and outscored them 9-0 in overtime.” Mague led the Lady Wolves (16-5) with 12 points, while Natalie Kossack
pulled down 15 rebounds. Alesia Bressler paced the Lady Tide (0-19) with 13 points. Hannah Walls
and Taylor Bumbarger added nine apiece. NOTES – Fight Cancer Night was a project of the Lady Tide Basketball
Booster Club in memory and honor of the late Alan Fairman, who was Curwensville's coach when he passed away in
March of 2006. He also had coached at DuBois Central Christian (now Catholic). The club, through donations from businesses and individuals, provided
a pink-and-white game ball as well as pink T-shirts for both teams, including coaches and scorekeepers. Fund-raisers and donations enabled the club to present $832 checks to
representatives of the Hahne Cancer Center in DuBois and The Nathaniel D. Yingling Cancer Center in Clearfield …
Bergman also added nine rebounds and needs four to break the school record set by Crystal Novosel-Johnson in 1997. KANE 43, CURWENSVILLE 34 SCORE BY QUARTERS Kane
