BRADFORD – Elk County Catholic's stingy man-to-man defense limited the Bradford Owls to 24 percent shooting and keyed the Crusaders to a 44-38 win at Bradford Wednesday night.

“Both of our games with Elk were carbon copies of one another,” Bradford head coach Dave Fuhrman said. “We scored 40 points at Elk in mid-January and 38 points tonight on our home court.  We wasted another good defensive effort.  You hold a team to 41 and 44 points you figure you ought to win about 95 percent of the time; yet we are 0-2 against them. Say what you want about basketball, but the most important skill in the game is being able to put the ball in the hoop. We just didn't do it enough in either game against them.  I thought tonight we got more shots and better shots but we missed a lot of layups and perimeter shots.  Make no mistake about it, they are an excellent man to man defensive team but we did have some opportunities that we didn't take advantage of tonight.”

The Owls shot a miserable 13 of 54 for 24 percent including just 3 of 15 for 20 percent from 3-point land.

“It is particularly disappointing to have those kind of shooting stats on your home court, but you must credit Elk's defense too as they do contest shots and make you work very hard to get shots,” Fuhrman said.

Nate Higgins led the Crusaders with 15 points while Pug Fuhrman led the Owls with 13 points.  No other player from either team was in double figures.

Elk finishes the regular season at 16-6 and finishes with a D9 league record of 9-3 while Bradford falls to 11-9 overall and 5-6 in D9.

The Crusaders will travel to DuBois Central Catholic Friday to meet the Cardinals in the semifinals of the AML tournament while Bradford travels to North Tier champion Cameron County on Friday.

“Hopefully we can bounce back on Friday,” Fuhrman said. “We still have a lot to play for as far as seeding goes for the upcoming playoffs.”
