Feb. 14, 2009 - AML Boys' Title Game

ST. MARYS – Johnsonburg used a quick start to win its first AML Title game with a 48-41 victory over two-time defending champion DuBois Central Catholic Saturday night at St. Marys High School.

The Rams (18-6) jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, and DCC (17-6) was never able to get closer than three points the rest of the way.

It was a balanced effort that led Johnsonburg to the title with Seth Streich leading the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ren Yonker added 13 points, while Aaron Patrick had 11.

John Ferraraccio paced DCC with 14 points but was the only Cardinal in double figures. Chris Marshall added eight tallies and Zach Volpe six.

The teams, who have met since Feb. 7 with Johnsonburg winning both times, could meet for a third time in three weeks Friday if Johnsonburg beats A-C Valley in the opening round of the District 9 Class A playoffs Wednesday. DCC hosts the winner of that game in the quarterfinals Friday. The Cardinals do own a win over Johnsonburg this season beating the Rams 62-58 Jan. 9.

NOTES – DCC has played in all four AML Title games, although this is the first time the Cardinals didn’t play Elk County Catholic. DCC and ECC met in the semifinals Friday night. This was the first year the conference had semifinals … DCC has now lost four of its past seven games after starting the season 14-2 … Johnsonburg, on the other hand, has won five straight and 11 of 13.
