SHIPPENVILLE – Led by sophomore Kayla Hoohuli, the 2008 All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Rookie of the Year and the leading scorer in District 9 a year ago, five players are members of the third annual DeMans D9Sports.com District 9 Preseason Girls’ All-District basketball team. Joining Hoohuli on the team are juniors Geena Sneeringer of West Forest and Sam Schwabenbauer of Keystone and seniors Ashley Campbell of Karns City and Bree Bergman of Kane. In addition to the five Preseason All-District team members, 10 “Players to Watch” are also listed. A breakdown of the All-District players in alphabetical order by school follows. BREE
BERGMAN – SR., F/C, KANE Bergman, who was a second-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 All-District selection a year ago, was the leading scorer for District 9 playoff participant Kane averaging 14.9 points per game, which was good for ninth in District 9. She ended the year averaging a double-double with 10.3 rebounds per contest and scored 20 or more points five times with a high of 24. She enters her senior season with 718 career tallies. ASHLEY
CAMPBELL – SR., F, KARNS CITY Campbell, who was a first-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 All-District selection last season, averaged 13.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for the District 9 Class AA champion Lady Gremlins. She added 2.6 assists and 2.5 steals per contest and scored 20 or more points three times with a high of 23. Down the stretch, she averaged 15.4 points per game in Karns City’s final eight contests, and she enters her senior season with 637 points. SAM
SCHWABENBAUER – JR., F, KEYSTONE Schwabenbauer has been showered with awards in her first two seasons. A 2008 All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 All-District second-team selection, she was also a D9Sports.com Preseason All-District pick prior to last season. As a freshman in 2007, she was named the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Co-Girls’ Rookie of the Year as well as a third-team All-District choice. Last year, she was the 15th leading scorer in District 9 averaging 13.6 points per game for KSAC champion Lady Panthers while adding 6.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.3 steals per game. She enters her junior year with 689 career points. KAYLA
HOOHULI – SO., G, ST. MARYS Hoohuli is without question the best player to grace District 9 in nearly a decade. As a freshman, she was the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Rookie of the Year as well as a first-team All-District selection. She led the district in scoring with 21.1 points per game, and her 549 points are believed to be the second most by a District 9 freshman behind only the district’s all-time leading scorer Sheana Mosch of DuBois Central Catholic, who finished her career with 3,066 points and went on to play at Duke and professionally in France. And Hoohuli’s 21.11 points per game actually were smidgen better than Mosch’s 21.07 points per game she scored as a rookie. For good measure, Hoohuli added 7.1 rebounds. 6.2 steals, 5.0 assists and 3.8 blocks per contest and became the first freshman to earn a first-team All-District nod in the nine years the award has been given and just the fourth freshman to make any of the three All-District teams. SNEERINGER – JR., G – WEST FOREST Like Schwabenbauer, Sneeringer has been a well decorated player in her first two seasons. She was the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Co-Girls’ Rookie of the Year in 2007 and a third-team All-District choice that season and then followed that up by being named a first-team All-District selection last season, just the second sophomore to earn first-team honors in the nine years the awards has been given. In 2008, Sneeringer was a key reason why West Forest won 22 games and finished second in District 9 Class A while advancing to the PIAA playoffs for the first time since 1982. She averaged 17.8 points per game, good for third best in District 9, and 9.6 rebounds per contest while adding 7.2 steals and 4.8 assists per game.
