SHIPPENVILLE – Led by last year’s leading scorer in District 9, Johnsonburg’s Seth Streich, six players are members of the third annual DeMans D9Sports.com Preseason Boys’ All-District basketball team. Joining Streich, a senior, on the team are fellow seniors Matt Shiner of Clearfield, Tyler Armagost of Moniteau, Mark Shannon of Brockway and Nate Higgins of Elk County Catholic and junior Scott Booth of Union. In addition to the six Preseason All-District team members, 10 “Players to Watch” are also listed. A breakdown of the All-District players in alphabetical order by school follows. MARK
SHANNON – SR., F/C, BROCKWAY Shannon, who was a third-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 All-District selection last season, nearly averaged a double-double for Brockway scoring 13.7 points per game while adding 9.5 rebounds and helping the Rovers to the District 9 Class AA semifinals. He also contributed 2.7 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.4 assists per contest and scored 20 or more points six times including a high of 27. He enters his senior year with 556 career points. MATT
SHINER – SR., G, CLEARFIELD Shiner was a second-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 All-District selection in 2008 after finishing ninth in District 9 in scoring at 17.2 points per game. He had a season-high 32 points in a contest and helped the Bisons to one of their most successful season in recent memory going 19-8 with a District 9 Class AAA runner-up finish and a PIAA playoff berth. He enters his senior year with 493 career tallies. NATE
HIGGINS – SR., G/F, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC Higgins was the leading scorer for Elk County Catholic last year averaging 12.5 points per game for the Crusaders. He added 6.1 rebounds per contest and also had 31 steals, 12 blocks and 17 assists while hitting 20 three-pointers. Higgins, who began his career at St. Marys before transferring to ECC prior to his sophomore season, has 566 career tallies despite playing very limited varsity minutes as a sophomore. SETH
STREICH – SR., F, JOHNSONBURG Streich’s junior season was an amazing one considering he led District 9 in scoring at 21.2 points per game while averaging a double-double with 10.4 rebounds per game despite not playing organized basketball since junior high. He added 2.4 steals, 1.8 assists and 1.3 blocks per contest and scored in double digits in each of his 23 games while netting 20 or more points 15 times with a high of 30 points. He averaged 24 points per contest over his final seven games while helping the Rams to the second round of the District 9 Class A playoffs. He was the only underclassmen named a boys’ first-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 performer. He enters his senior season with 488 points, and, while it might seem a long shot, he needs to score just 24 more points than he did a year ago to reach 1,000 career points in just two seasons. TYLER
ARMAGOST – SR., G – MONITEAU Armagost was the second-leading scorer for the District 9 Class AA quarterfinalist Warriors in 2008 averaging 15.9 points per game while adding 11.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists per contest. He was tied for 16th in District 9 in scoring and is the fourth-leading returning scorer from a year ago. An outstanding athlete, he finished second in District 9 this fall in passing yards. Armagost is also the leading active scorer in District 9 with 765 career points and is looking to become the sixth player in school history to score 1,000 career points. SCOTT
BOOTH – JR., G/F – UNION Booth was the top sophomore in District 9 last year finishing fourth in the district in scoring at 19 points per game. He scored 20 or more tallies nine times including a career-high 35 points. The nephew of Union head coach Karen Davis, Booth enters his junior season with a shot at 1,000 career points. He has 627 tallies and should make a run at the school record of 1,299 set by Kyle Hilliard before his career is over.
