ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic built a 33-4 halftime lead on its way to an easy 56-15 win over visiting Port Allegany in the opening round of the District 9 Class A boys’ basketball playoffs Wednesday night on Aaron Straub Court at ECC.

The AML Champion and third-seeded Crusaders (21-4) led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter and the allowed the 14th seeded Gators (10-13) just two points over the next two quarters including none in the second half.

Darren Simons led ECC with a career-high 13 points off the bench, while Robby Wortman chipped in nine. Twelve different Crusaders reached the scoreboard.

Matt Bodamer paced Port Allegany with six points.

ECC will now face Ridgway in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday at ECC. The Crusaders have beaten the Elkers twice this season at ECC winning 35-32 in the AML semifinals last Friday after getting a 64-40 season-opening win Dec. 11.

NOTES – Port Allegany’s 15 points are the lowest by a District 9 boys’ team in the playoffs since at least 1999 (year from which records are available) and are the fewest by either a boys’ or girls’ District 9 teams in the D9 playoffs since Punxsutawney’s girls’ scored 14 in a 51-14 loss to St. Marys in the 2008 Class AAA title game … The previous boys’ low-point output since 1999 was 22 by Bradford in the Class AAA semifinals in 2005 when it lost 49-22 to Clearfield. The lowest by a Class A team was 23 by North Clarion in 2004 when Johnsonburg beat the Wolves 66-23 in the quarterfinals, which was the first round that year … Since 1999, six boys’ teams have been held under 30 points in the D9 postseason. Last year, Brockway beat Cranberry 32-29 in the Class AA title game, in 2007 ECC topped Rocky Grove 79-26 in the Class A quarterfinals and in 2006 ECC beat Coudersport 66-26 in the Class A title game on its way to the state title … Amazingly, nine of Port’s 15 points came on 3-pointers.
